How to do it

For a full walkthrough with a worked monthly example, see How to create a Flexible Spending Targets budget. To budget only the money you already have, try the Zero-Based Budgeting guide (Beta).

Monthly budget overviewMonthly targets and remaining amounts on mobile.

1. Look at recent spending

Check a recent month to see what you normally spend on groceries, housing, travel and other categories.

2. Set monthly targets

Choose realistic amounts for the categories you want to manage.

3. Add upcoming bills and income

Review recurring payments and expected income so the forecast has useful information.

4. Check your progress

Compare what you have spent with your targets during the month.

5. Adjust when life changes

Update your budget or recurring bills when amounts or dates change.

Good to know: A forecast is an estimate based on the information you enter and import—not a guarantee of your future bank balance.
