Before making a correction
Get a dated brokerage statement and the corresponding Portfolio account view. Compare the same account, date and currency. A mismatch is useful information; don't immediately change the number of shares.
1. Verify positions line by line
Compare security symbols, exchanges, quantity and quote currencies. Pay extra attention to fractional shares, split-adjusted quantities and similar tickers.
2. Separate the causes
| What looks wrong? | Check next |
|---|---|
| Holdings value is right; account total is low | Missing uninvested CAD or USD cash |
| One holding differs markedly | Ticker, exchange, share split or stale quote |
| Only CAD total differs | USD conversion rate and valuation date |
| History jumped after an import | Deposits, withdrawals, duplicates and missing earlier holdings |
3. Test with an example
If 20 shares are worth $50 each on the statement and cash is $300, you expect a $1,300 total before other positions or liabilities. If Cashflow displays $1,000, check the $300 cash line first.
4. Correct only the source of the difference
Edit the affected holding or cash entry, not unrelated transactions. Recheck totals and save a backup before a larger import. Never force the latest quoted price into an earlier date just to reconcile today's value.
Continue with tracking brokerage cash and understanding history.
