Before you start
Have the latest bank and card statements handy. Choose a consistent month-end date and compare like-for-like currencies. A simple recurring routine is more useful than changing many old transactions at once.
1. Bring in any missing activity
Import only the period that has not been reviewed. Check account, dates, signs and duplicates in the preview. Keep the original statements available until the balances match.
2. Review categories and transfers
Check the largest transactions and any uncategorized or unusual merchants first. Payments between accounts are not usually expenses or income. Verify proposed categories yourself, especially when business and personal merchants overlap.
3. Compare this month with your plan
With Flexible Spending Targets, compare spending against target categories and adjust next month's plan. If you are testing Zero-Based Budgeting (Beta), review the amount available to assign and your category balances before changing allocations. Do not assume the two methods calculate balances identically.
4. Review what comes next
Check recurring bills, subscription changes, forecast assumptions and upcoming large payments. A forecast is an estimate, not a promise of the future bank balance.
5. Save a stable starting point
- Note unresolved statement differences and fix the underlying rows.
- Save an up-to-date backup using your available export workflow.
- Keep a short note of category rule changes or unusual cash flows.
Next: understand your forecast or review Flexible Spending Targets.
