Start with one real statement per account
For each brokerage or pension account, note the statement date, owner, account type, currency and total holdings. Do not combine a household total with a single-owner view.
1. Keep account types distinct
A TFSA, RRSP, LIRA, non-registered investment account and corporate account can have different reporting and tax implications. The account's label is for organization, not tax determination. Review the available account types in your version.
2. Compare the correct owner view
If you track more than one owner's investments, compare each owner's balances separately. Household totals may aggregate owners, but do not treat a corporate asset as a personal TFSA. Make sure imported account mappings point to the intended owner.
3. Keep original currency visible
Illustrative example: An account contains $500 CAD cash and $200 USD cash in addition to securities. Both balances are assets, but you cannot add 500 and 200 to get a CAD total without converting the USD amount using a dated rate. The CAD equivalent changes when foreign exchange rates change.
4. Check for duplicate assets
- Compare holdings quantity and price with the broker statement.
- Check each account's idle cash, including multiple currencies.
- Confirm whether a connected or imported provider already includes cash in the account total.
- Compare values on the same date and avoid adding a cash holding twice.
